Plant protein comes from peas, brown rice, hemp, pumpkin seed, sunflower seed, or a blend of several. If a plant powder made you bloated once, check whether the culprit was the pea protein or the erythritol.

Plant proteins come with a different set of considerations. They are lactose-free by nature, which resolves the most common complaint outright. Some people find the fiber that rides along with plant protein takes a short adjustment period, particularly if their usual diet is low in fiber to begin with. That adjustment tends to pass within a week or two, and the fiber itself is feeding the bacteria in your colon rather than irritating them.

Lean toward whey if you digest dairy comfortably, if you train hard and want the fastest possible post-workout amino acid rise, and if you have found a clean formula without a long list of additives.

A few practical notes either way. Take protein with food rather than on an empty stomach if shakes tend to sit heavily. Drink enough water, since higher protein intake raises your fluid needs.
